IELTS Test Format 2026 in India: Writing and Speaking Guide

Understand the IELTS 2026 test format in India, including computer delivery, Writing on Paper from September, Speaking timing, scoring, and preparation.

The IELTS test format in India is moving to computer delivery in 2026, but the skills, question types, timing, and band scoring do not become harder. From 1 September 2026, selected Indian test locations are also scheduled to offer Writing on Paper for candidates who prefer handwriting.

IELTS India 2026: the quick answer

  • Listening and Reading are completed on computer.
  • Writing is typed on computer unless you book the new Writing on Paper option.
  • Speaking remains an interview with a certified IELTS examiner.
  • The test content and band descriptors have not changed.

What changed in the IELTS test format in India in 2026?

IELTS announced that the traditional paper-based test would stop being offered from mid-2026, with the exact transition date varying by market. This is a change in delivery, not a new exam syllabus. The official announcement confirms that the skills assessed, the test construct, and the interpretation of results remain the same.

India has a country-specific option for candidates who write more confidently by hand. IELTS Writing on Paper in India is scheduled to be available from 1 September 2026 at selected locations. You still complete Listening and Reading on computer, see the Writing questions on screen, and handwrite only your Writing responses.

Availability depends on the test centre and date. Confirm the delivery mode shown on the official booking page before paying, especially if your application requires IELTS for UKVI.

How long is the IELTS Speaking test in 2026?

IELTS Speaking takes 11 to 14 minutes. It is recorded and follows the same three parts used before the delivery update. Computer delivery does not turn Speaking into a multiple-choice or AI-only test.

  1. Part 1: Introduction and interview (4–5 minutes). Answer questions about familiar topics such as home, studies, work, and interests.
  2. Part 2: Long turn (3–4 minutes). Prepare for one minute, then speak for up to two minutes from a task card.
  3. Part 3: Discussion (4–5 minutes). Explain and develop more abstract ideas connected to the Part 2 topic.

Examiners score four equally important areas: fluency and coherence, lexical resource, grammatical range and accuracy, and pronunciation. Practising complete timed answers is more useful than memorising a polished script that may not fit the question.

How IELTS Writing is scored in 2026

Whether you type or handwrite, IELTS Writing is assessed with the same four criteria. The first criterion is called Task Achievement in Task 1 and Task Response in Task 2.

  • Task Achievement or Task Response: answer every part of the prompt.
  • Coherence and Cohesion: organise ideas and connect them clearly.
  • Lexical Resource: use precise, appropriate vocabulary.
  • Grammatical Range and Accuracy: control a useful range of sentence structures.

Use the official IELTS Writing band descriptors as a revision checklist. If you cannot identify why a response is currently Band 6 rather than Band 7, more practice essays alone will not solve the problem.

Should you choose typed Writing or Writing on Paper?

Run one full 60-minute mock in each available mode and compare the finished responses.

Choose typed Writing if...Consider Writing on Paper if...
You type accurately without looking at the keyboard.Your handwriting is faster and remains easy to read.
You revise by moving and replacing sentences. You plan and draft more naturally with a pen.
The on-screen word count helps your time control.Screen-based writing slows your idea development.

The best mode is the one that produces a clearer, more complete answer under time pressure. It does not receive easier scoring.

A focused 14-day preparation plan

  1. Days 1–2: Complete one timed Writing test and one Speaking mock to establish a baseline.
  2. Days 3–6: Fix one scoring weakness, such as incomplete Task 2 development or short Part 3 answers.
  3. Day 7: Repeat a full mock in the delivery mode you plan to book.
  4. Days 8–12: Rewrite weak answers after feedback and record new Speaking responses to the same questions.
  5. Days 13–14: Run two final simulations at the same time of day as your test.

You can use Writing Better for IELTS Task 2 practice and Speaking Better for a timed IELTS Speaking mock to shorten the feedback loop between attempts.
